The villa is situated in a quiet residential area on the Southern edge of the village of Castries. Castries is a very popular village, close to Montpellier (15 mins) yet surrounded by vineyards and pine forests. It is just a short walk to the shops, restaurants, Chocolatier, patisseries and medical services. There are 2 large supermarkets located 10 mins drive away (Carrefour and Leclerc). The local baker delivers fresh bread and pastries every day at 10 am (except Wednesday).
Castries was originally founded by the Romans, probably as a look out tower for the nearby Roman road (Via Domitia), which connected Rome to Northern Spain. Today this very attractive village is dominated by the beautiful 11th Century Chateau located in the centre of the village, as well as the fully intact aqueduct. The aqueduct was built in 1676 by the engineer, Pierre-Paul Riquet, who also constructed the Canal du Midi. The aqueduct was needed to bring fresh water to the gardens of the Chateau (which were designed by André Le Nôtre, the gardener of Louis XIV).
The nearest beach is 25 minutes away. The beautiful Camargue region and the walled town of Aigues Mortes are just 45 mins away. The Pic St Loup Wine Route is always a popular activity for sampling some excellent wines. The medieval town of Sommières is a great place to visit on a Saturday, when a huge market takes over the town.
There is a Golf course in Baillargues (10 mins) and Horse riding (2 minute drive).
Montpellier has a TGV train station. The local tram network provides easy access around Montpellier. The nearest tram stop is located in the neighbouring village of Jacou. Local bus services run from Castries to Montpellier.
The nearest airport to the villa is located at Montpellier (15 mins drive). Other local airports include:
Nimes airport (30 mins)
Beziers airport (45 mins)
Avignon airport (50 mins)
Marseille airport (1 hour 25 mins)
