The local village of Ménesplet is located in a densly wooded area, in the west of the Dordogne department. The village has a population of 1,800 people. This area of Dordogne is known locally as the Fôret de la Double. During the Hundred Years War, the forest formed the border of the lands controlled by the King of France and the King of England. Timber from the forest was used extensively for the production of oak wine barrels and ship building in nearby Bordeaux. During the late 19th Century, the management of the forest was given over to a community of Trappist Monks, who helped to re-forest parts of the woodland, as well to dig drainage ditches, ponds and canals. This enabled livestock pasture to be created and the area became synomynous with the production of the Trappe Échourgnac cheese, which was produced by the Monks.
