La Fôret de la Double is an ancient woodland area which sits on the border of the Dordogne, Gironde and Charente-Maritime departments. During the Hundred Years War, the forest formed the border of the lands controlled by the King of France and the King of England. Timber from the forest was used extensively for the production of oak wine barrels and ship building in nearby Bordeaux. During the late 19th Century, the management of the forest was given over to a community of Trappist Monks, who helped to re-forest parts of the woodland, as well to dig drainage ditches, ponds and canals. This enabled livestock pasture to be created and the area became synomynous with the production of the Trappe Échourgnac cheese, which was produced by the Monks.
The nearby village of Eygurande-et-Gardedeuil, has a population of 380 people. The nearby town of Montpon-Ménestérol, has a population of around 5,500 people and provides most of the shops and services for the area, including shops, restaurants, hotels and schools.
The nearby train station at Montpon-Ménestérol, has rail connections to Bordeaux, Périgueux, Brive-la-Gaillarde and Limoges.
Bergerac airport is 45 mins away. Bordeaux airport is 1 hour.
La Fôret de la Double is located 10 mins from the A89 motorway (exit Montpon-Ménestérol). Bordeaux is 1 hour away (south-west) and Périgueux is 50 mins (north-east). Bergerac is 40 mins to the south.
