This house is truly a rare find–I advise snapping it up if you are thinking about a long stay in the south-west! We rented in August 2023 for the 2023-24 school year, and have found the house to be extremely comfortable, well-equipped, in an ideal location and circumstance. It’s an old home with the thick walls and high ceilings that are typical of older constructions, and it’s within the “old village” meaning it’s close to the center and you have a sense of the history, unlike some of the newer suburban constructions that can be a bit cookie-cutter. Quite often, the older, more central, houses for let have no garden, or at most a terrasse, but this house has a lovely garden, pool, and summer kitchen, making it the best of both worlds. Nézignan L’Évêque is also a great location–the village is tiny but has the most important comforts: an epicerie and the all-important boulangerie with good croissants and baguettes, with rumors of a bar-café on the way. It feels intimate, and the street has lovely neighbors who are very friendly. Despite the feel of the tiny rural village with vineyards all around, the city of Pezenas with good restaurants, groceries, butchers, cafés, brocantes (and kids activities like sports) is less than 10 minutes away, providing close-by amenities and conveniences while still preserving an old-world feel to the house and village. The area is a bit difficult to get to for international travelers–most of our guests came into Barcelona and took trains or rented cars to get to us, but it’s also full of lesser-visited gems that we continually discovered over the course of the year. In a 2-hour driving radius, there was more art, culture, history, and beautiful countryside than we could complete in a year. Village life is active, with celebrations all throughout the year. The network of rural roads and paths provide easy walking and running trails, with beaches an easy drive away (Meze was our favorite!). If you have a primary-school aged child that you are considering enrolling, the process for us was straightforward and people were helpful. The house is spacious with room for visitors (for most families). I cooked probably at least 6 nights per week in the kitchen with no problem. The furnishings are comfortable, sturdy, and attractive. We had easy and fast communications with the owners. Overall, a delightful home and a wonderful year that changed our lives!
